Legal Issues and Marketing the Focus of the Mobile Self-Storage Association Fall Conference and Tradeshow

St Louis, MO – October 31, 2005

Eighty-Five members, prospective members and vendors attended the second annual MSSA Fall Conference & Tradeshow October 20 and 21 in Charleston, SC.

The activities began with a Thursday morning Golf Tournament. That afternoon, they were treated to a tour of Charleston Marine Container’s manufacturing facility, the only steel container manufacturing facility in the United States. CargoTech, an MSSA corporate sponsor, wrapped up the tour with a demonstration of their Moffett Mounted Forklift.

Next, the group was taken by motor coach to Charleston Harbor where they boarded The Spirit of Carolina for a dinner cruise. The cruise of Charleston Harbor and Patriots Point provided a perfect setting for networking, where members, vendors and prospects exchanged marketing and operational ideas in preparation for the next day’s conference.

At the conference, Randy Weissman, the MSSA President, announced that the Association’s website,, is undergoing a major renovation. “The Association was originally formed as a cooperative marketing vehicle to provide industry awareness, customer lead generation, and interstate container shipping options. Our updated website helps us achieve those goals.” Included in the new website is a customer- interactive storage estimator that can be embedded and skinned into individual member sites, a mobile storage locator map, and website search engine optimization. Brian Russell of Insight Resources is developing the update and demonstrated the new product to the members.

Carlos Kaslow discussed legal issues facing mobile storage operators and presented the framework for a Model Rental Agreement. MSSA Vice-President, Gary Crawford, spearheads the legal efforts of the Association. “We have spent the better part of a year working with Carlos Kaslow, to develop a Model Rental Agreement for this industry. Because we operate in several states with different laws, we are not able to come up with a contract we can all use. However, we did come up with a outline of procedures and language that we recommend including in our members rental agreements.”

The conference culminated in a tradeshow, where vendors had the opportunity to demonstrate their products and services to all who attended.
